Ingredients
  

Cookie Dough
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg large
  • 1.5 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.5 tsp almond extract optional
  • 0.5 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt
Colors & Decoration
  • red food coloring gel preferred
  • green food coloring gel preferred
  • holiday sprinkles optional

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking sheet

  • Hand mixer or stand mixer

Method
 

  1. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Mix in egg, vanilla, and almond extract.
  3. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt; combine with wet ingredients.
  4. Divide dough into three portions and color two portions red and green.
  5. Roll each dough portion into a thin rectangle between parchment sheets.
  6. Layer dough sheets, then roll tightly into a log.
  7. Chill dough for at least 2 hours.
  8. Slice into rounds and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 9–11 minutes.

Notes

For extra sparkle, roll the dough log in sprinkles before slicing. Dough freezes beautifully for make-ahead baking.
