Ingredients
  

Cake Batter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1.25 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs large
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup milk room temperature
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 2 tbsp hot water
Optional Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 0.5 tsp vanilla extract

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9x5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl.
  3. Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
  4. Gradually mix in dry ingredients, alternating with milk.
  5. Combine cocoa powder and hot water; stir into one-third of the batter.
  6. Layer vanilla and chocolate batters alternately in the pan; swirl with a knife.
  7. Bake 50–60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool before glazing.

Notes

Use good-quality cocoa for the richest chocolate flavor.
