  • 8 oz dried chipped beef sliced
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper or to taste
  • 4 slices bread toasted

Method
 

  1. Bring a small saucepan of water to a boil. Add chipped beef and simmer 1–2 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  2. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  3. Whisk flour into butter and cook 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
  4. Slowly whisk in milk until smooth and thickened.
  5. Stir in chipped beef and black pepper. Simmer 2–3 minutes.
  6. Serve hot over toasted bread.

Notes

Rinse chipped beef briefly to reduce saltiness before cooking.
