- Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender.
- Drain well and mash until smooth.
- Stir in butter, cream, milk, sour cream, garlic, salt, and pepper.
- Fold in cheese if using.
- Spread into a greased baking dish.
- Bake at 375°F for 30–35 minutes until golden.
