Method
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg, vanilla, and peppermint extract and mix well.
- Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients until dough forms.
- Divide dough in half. Leave one half plain and color the other half with red gel food coloring.
- Roll portions of each dough into long ropes. Twist together and shape into candy cane form.
- Place on baking sheets and bake 8–10 minutes until set but not browned.
- Sprinkle with crushed candy canes while warm if desired.
- Cool completely on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
Gel food coloring works best for maintaining dough texture. Chill dough if too soft for shaping.
