- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and optional cloves.
- In a large bowl, beat softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla extract and mix well.
- Gradually mix in dry ingredients until a soft dough forms.
- Roll dough into 1-inch balls, create an indentation in the center using your thumb or a spoon, or use heart-shaped cutters.
- Fill each indentation with 1 teaspoon of jam.
- Bake 12–15 minutes until edges are lightly golden. Cool on wire rack.
- Optional: dust with powdered sugar before serving.
