German Chocolate Cookie Bars

Rich and chewy chocolate cookie bars topped with a classic coconut-pecan frosting.

Ingredients
  

Cookie Batter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1.5 cups brown sugar packed
  • 2 eggs large
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
Topping
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1.5 cups shredded coconut
  • 1 cup pecans chopped

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking sheet
  • Wire rack
  • Hand mixer or stand mixer

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking pan.
  2. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl.
  3. Cream butter and sugar, then add eggs and vanilla.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients and fold in chocolate chips.
  5. Press dough into pan.
  6. Cook topping ingredients until thick, then stir in coconut and pecans.
  7. Spread topping and add remaining dough.
  8. Bake 30–35 minutes and cool before slicing.

Notes

Cool completely before slicing for clean bars.
