How to Make Bao Buns

Ingredients
  

Bao Bun Dough
  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 0.75 cup warm milk
  • 0.25 cup warm water
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 0.5 tsp salt
Optional Fillings
  • 1 cup BBQ pork cooked
  • 0.5 cup pickled vegetables
  • 0.25 cup green onions sliced
  • 0.25 cup hoisin sauce

Method
 

  1. Combine warm milk, warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, baking powder, salt, and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 to 1½ hours until doubled.
  5. Divide dough into 10–12 pieces and roll each into a ball.
  6. Flatten each ball into an oval, brush lightly with oil, and fold in half.
  7. Place each bun on parchment paper and let rise again for 30 minutes.
  8. Steam buns for 10–12 minutes until fluffy and cooked through.
  9. Fill buns with desired fillings and serve warm.

Notes

Avoid opening the steamer lid while cooking to keep the buns fluffy and smooth.
