Ingredients

  • 1 large loaf French bread or 2 baguettes, halved lengthwise
  • 1 lb ground beef 85/15 recommended
  • 1 small onion finely diced
  • 1 green bell pepper finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce or Sloppy Joe sauce
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder optional
  • salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter softened
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped, divided
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese or cheddar
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese optional, for topping

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Baking sheet
  • Sharp knife
  • Mixing bowl

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice bread lengthwise and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Mix butter, garlic, and parsley, then spread on bread halves.
  2. Cook ground beef in a skillet until browned. Drain excess fat. Add onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Sauté 3–4 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire, paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer 5–6 minutes until thickened.
  4. Spoon Sloppy Joe mixture over bread halves. Top with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  5. Bake for 12–15 minutes, until cheese is melted and bubbly. Broil 2 minutes for golden top.
  6. Sprinkle with fresh parsley, slice, and serve warm.

Notes

Make the beef mixture ahead for quick assembly. For spice, add jalapeños or use pepper jack cheese. Leftovers reheat best in the oven or air fryer.
