Ingredients

Base Ingredients
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries hulled
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice from about 2 lemons
  • 1 tbsp honey or simple syrup adjust to taste
  • 4 fresh basil leaves
  • 3 oz vodka or gin optional
  • sparkling water to top off
  • ice cubes
Garnish
  • extra strawberries for garnish
  • lemon slices for garnish
  • fresh basil sprigs for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar
  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • 2 serving glasses
  • Jigger or measuring cups

Method

  1. In a cocktail shaker or mason jar, muddle the strawberries, basil leaves, and lemon juice together until the strawberries are juicy and the mixture is fragrant.
  2. Add honey (or simple syrup) and vodka or gin if using. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds to combine all ingredients well.
  3. Using a fine mesh strainer, strain the mixture into two glasses filled with fresh ice cubes, pressing the solids to extract maximum flavor.
  4. Top off each glass with sparkling water and stir gently to combine without losing the bubbles.
  5. Garnish each glass with a fresh basil sprig, lemon wedge, or strawberry slice for a beautiful summer presentation. Serve immediately while cold and bubbly.

Notes

For a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the vodka or gin. You can substitute simple syrup for honey if preferred. For extra sweetness, muddle additional strawberries. This cocktail is best served immediately while the sparkling water is still bubbly. Fresh basil is essential for the best flavor - dried basil won't provide the same aromatic quality.
