Ingredients

Steak Components
  • 1 lb ribeye or sirloin steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Caramelized Onions
  • 2 large yellow onions, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar optional
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar optional
Assembly
  • 4 sandwich rolls or ciabatta buns
  • 6-8 slices Havarti cheese
  • 1 tbsp butter (for toasting)

Equipment

  • Cast iron skillet
  • Cutting board
  • Chef’s knife
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Slow-cook onions in butter and olive oil over medium-low heat until golden and caramelized, about 25–30 minutes.
  2. Season and sear thinly sliced steak in a hot skillet until browned but tender, about 2–3 minutes per batch.
  3. Butter and toast sandwich rolls until golden and crisp.
  4. Layer steak onto bread and top with Havarti cheese to melt slightly.
  5. Add caramelized onions and optional toppings like greens or aioli.
  6. Close sandwich, slice, and serve warm immediately.

Notes

Best served immediately while hot for optimal cheese melt and texture contrast.
